My Way Of Studying

When you are on a college tour as a prospective student the tour guides like to tell you all about the fun events the residence halls hold, the new Chick-fil-A that just opened on campus, or all the features in the students center. Yet we are all at college for our education and to get a degree, and sometimes we students forget that. I am guilty of this too, sometimes I spend too much time worrying about getting my ticket to the football game instead of my test coming
up next week. In a world where our attention span is getting increasingly shorter it is so important to remain concentrated on my studies, because that’s how I’m going to earn my degree and secure a job after college. Over the last few semesters I have created my own plan and rules on how to concentrate on my studies overall and my individual studies such as classes, exams, essays and so on referring the current board syllabus. The biggest ways I concentrate on my studies is through organization and using my technology correctly, but I also have more personal ways of staying focused when it comes to studying.
Nothing of quality or important can be created without organization. In August before I arrive on campus I always purchase an academic year planner. Not just a generic one from the bookstore but one that motivates and inspires me. Then at the beginning of every syllabus week I color code my planner. Classes, work, social life, volunteering, each of these things get their own color in my planner. Then I follow the syllabus for all my classes and write out every assignment I have for the semester. This is so helpful because I don’t have to look through each syllabus every Sunday to figure out my work for the week, I can flip through and see what is coming up the next week! I also have a daily to do pad so I can keep track of other things besides my studies like food shopping, laundry, cleaning and such. By organizing everything in my life I can spend more time actually concentrating on my studies rather than figuring out what I
have to do. Good organization inevitably leads to good time management, which is crucial when it comes to focusing on my studies.
Organization is the main way I concentrate on my studies as a whole, I have spreadsheets of my degree requirements, and color code the classes based on what I already completed, what I am taking now, and what classes I’ll take next semester but when it comes to concentrating on my studies for a test or exam, I have a few other things I do to keep me concentrated. The biggest way I stay concentrated is turning off my phone. It can be such a distraction and
lead to hours of procrastination. Especially when I need to concentrate on an assignment I am so tempted to scroll through Instagram or Twitter, but by turning if off I turn off that temptation. I do however keep my computer on mainly because I use it to do work but also because I, as I think a lot of people, have a need to be connected. On my computer I am only connected through my messages, so when I need a break I can respond to my friends or text my friends rather than scrolling through social media for a half hour.
The previous ways of staying concentrated on my studies probably seem pretty usually and popular with a lot of people, but I do have a few personal ways I stay focused. Music and snacks are essential when I am trying to concentrate on studying. I also use my computer to play music while I study. I like to play songs with few lyrics or instrumental versions so I can still concentrate on the words I’m reading or writing, but it keeps me talking to the person next to me or joining a conversation around me. Listening to songs without lyrics removes the distraction from the music for me and also let’s me zone out the world around me so I can concentrate just on my studying. My other favorite way to concentrate is my having a snack with me. I am not sure how this started but I like to have a snack that has small individual pieces, like skittles, m&ms, cashews, or berries. I am not sure why this helps me concentrate but to me food is comfort and my mind will start to wander when I am studying to what I am having for dinner or what food I’ll pick up for lunch so my having
a snack with me, I can clear my mind and focus just on what’s in front of me.
Out of all of the ways I stay concentrated on my studies, the most effective one is organization. Organization helps me stay concentrated on my studies in the long run. I am able to map out exactly what I want to accomplish and my making long term goals for myself using my organizational skills I stay concentrated and focused not just on studying for exams and classes, but on my studies and degree in general.
